Violence is seen in various television
shows. This is possibly one of the main reasons as to why teenagers behave
badly, and why they behave violently. Television can be a huge influence to
children and teenagers around the world, especially in developing their value
systems, gaining respect, and instilling discipline.
According to the American Academy of
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, there are several effects of watching
television violence. Hundreds of studies of the effects of television violence
prove that children or teenagers may become numb to the horror of violence.
This means that they will not be able to realize that violence is wrong; they
wouldn’t know how to determine right from wrong. They will also be able to
accept and see that violence is a way to solve problems, imitate the violence
that they observe, and they will be able to identify with certain characters.
Extensive programing of television violence by children can greatly increase
their aggressiveness. The impact of television violence may show immediately or
several years later, according to the article. One way that this can be avoided
is for the parents to play close attention to what their child watches on
television. It is very crucial that they follow ratings, whether the show/film is
PG (Parental Guidance), G (General), SPG (Strict Parental Guidance), etc. It is
important that parents implement this strictly. Some ways that can be used to
avoid watching television violence is that parents can pay close attention to
what their children are watching, and if possible, watch some shows with them.
These measures can also be used to avoid the children from the harmful effects
of television, such as racial and sexual stereotyping. Children and teenagers
still have a lot of knowledge to acquire. They learn from both experience
social learning, or from what they see in their surroundings. Therefore, they
will have difficulty in differentiating what is real and what isn’t, and they
might tend to copy what they are seeing. Teenagers with behavioral problems
tend to be more influenced by television violence. This is because they are the
ones that have the most difficult time dealing with themselves, and also have
difficulty in fathoming their feelings or thoughts. This can lead to really bad
and unnecessary behavior that even they cannot control.
Television violence should be
lessened, too. This way, lesser teenagers can be exposed to violence. This can
be one solution to solve it; surely there would be another way to show
entertainment without showing violence. Children and teenagers should be
exposed to better shows or films. Since they are just young and their minds are
still developing, they should be exposed to shows that can benefit them, shows
that will improve their behavior in terms of discipline and respect. Now we can
see why it is really hard for the youth to cope and deal with society, because
most teenagers sometimes cannot even understand themselves. Teenagers get so
much pressure from society, so it really gets difficult for them to deal with
the pressure. This is why violence should not be shown in television; it brings
so much bad effects to not only teenagers, but also some adults.
