Unexpected Success (and A Hint of Passion)

Success doesn’t come along easily. It’s not something you can just come across or get when you want it. It takes time and a whole lot of effort. And sometimes, it comes at the most unexpected times, and begins with just one simple decision you make.

It all started in Grade 6. The search for the next SCT has started, and originally, I had no intentions of running for any position in the student council. But after a whole lot of persuading from my friends and teachers, I decided to give it a shot. Besides, I knew it won’t make much of an impact in my life…

Until I won.

I was completely shocked when I found out I got elected into office, knowing that it definitely wasn’t a smooth journey to get to where I was. I worked really hard to make the people who believed in me be proud of me, so I knew I had to keep pushing myself until the end.

I knew from that day on, my life has completely changed. I had to let go of my old bad habits and work harder. I had to learn how to balance both my academics and extra-curricular activities, even if it meant no sleep at all, but it was the best roller-coaster ride I ever experienced.

I was able to grab different opportunities that were right in front of me, which made me learn how to be a better leader, and how to be a better person in general. And I believe that THAT was what made me find my passion: To serve other people.

But nobody said finding what success is, and discovering what your passion is, will be easy. You will never be able to avoid challenges that will hinder you from reaching your goal. You will have to work hard, push yourself, and work even harder. There may be times that you will doubt yourself and even give up, but look at it this way: I was able to find what I love the most because of a life-changing decision I made when I was 12, and I didn't even realize it. Since then I am always being given different once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and learning more and more along the way, and THAT is what success is for me. I get to do what I love, meet new people, learn new things, and making other people happier all at the same time.

The simple decision of getting up and doing something good today will take you one step closer to success. It may not seem like it’s much of a big deal, but it WILL go a long way, and can even make someone smile. You'll never know what to expect from this, but it's always better to say you tried, than say you never tried at all.

How about you? Have you made that important decision to find what success means to you?
